This Avant Garde piece of wearable art features a single word hand carved in wax and cast in solid sterling silver using the lost wax casting method. Set into the silver of the final letter are three diamonds sparkling modestly as though they are the artists ‘tag’ on the piece. This silver layer has been oxidized in the deepest areas and polished on the raised surfaces allowing for light to reflect and play amongst the intertwining letters. Beneath this layer is a hand cut piece of titanium that has been thermal coloured with a flame, its shape represents a morphed cityscape with a matching reflection beneath. Under this colourful titanium layer is a handcut piece of mild steel that again reflects the morphed cityscape of Melbourne, the upper side of which has been etched using nitric acid to create a subtle brick wall texture on its surface. Applied to the mild steel using the ancient Korean Keum Boo gilding technique is 24 carat gold leaf, creating a speckled gold lustre upon the steel.
The neckpiece that suspends these complex layers is constructed from oxidized sterling silver, cast and hand crafted elements combine to develop the urban scenic theme further, incorporating imagery of power lines and train tracks.
Inspired by the marvels of Melbourne’s cityscape, Emily has merged imagery of graffiti, street art and mundane urban sights to create this wearable masterpiece of contemporary design.
This work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout Australia, and travelled to China for the 2013 Beijing International Jewelry Exhibition.
This piece can be purchased, or you can commission Emily to design and craft something equally amazing to suit your style. Please contact us for any enquiries.
